There are bugs everywhere with audio cutting out, AI characters spurting all over the place, text not appearing or literal “placeholder text” behind left-in prompts. Unfortunately, Saints Row seems to have been released before a lot of it was ready to see the light of day. Stage 4: Denialĭespite what you may have heard elsewhere, game development is hard. The amount of texture in this world reminds us of an Xbox 360 game. Fifteen years later, we've moved on – just – but Saints Row feels stuck there, woefully antiquated for this day and age. It feels like a trip back to 2007, when we were halfway through college, had never paid tax, and thought a v-neck River Island t-shirt was a substitute for a personality. Our nameless avatar is still spouting a lot of empty swear words but there’s something hopeful and optimistic about a big open world stretching out in front of you. Maybe this will improve? We're out driving in the open world now, having finished up the opening mission, and on the way to our first main objective in one of the city’s suburban districts. Despite this egregiousness, the general effect of Saints Row toning down its silliness and entering what we're calling its ‘post-dildo’ era means everything else about the game is thrown into sharp relief. It’s cringy, wannabe edgelord stuff that would’ve felt dated in early 2010 let alone mid-2022 with stilted acting and an over-reliance on swear words (sample quote: “what in the actual goddamn motherfucking goddamn fuck”). The first mission, a big and equally generic corridor shootout, throws the kitchen sink at you with bombastic explosions and obnoxious dialogue. Worryingly, the game makes a poor first impression. we like them too and there's not been a big open city game since Cyberpunk 2077. You know the deal here: you're in the big city, you shoot guns, you steal cars, you go on adventures with a bawdy gang of freaks and weirdos. Especially since its most compelling traits are very much a known quantity.
With the likes of Starfield, Nintendo's Breath of the Wild 2 and countless others all slipping back to 2023, Saints Row has the chance to be an unusually big deal. It’s 2022 and there haven’t been a whole load of major video games this year. Why? Here are the seven stages of Saints Row-related grief… Stage 1: Anticipation With a nonsensical story, grating characters, flat mechanics and several technical sins, this is a game we sadly do not recommend you play. But while the new Saints Row is still much sillier than GTA – more MTV than HBO – it's still less of a throwaway romp and more a throw-in-the-bin disaster.
